In today’s world women would be horrified with the thought that they could not be trusted outside the confines of a RAAF Base, to be an independant thinking human being. But this was the case throughout the history of the WRAAF. We had to get a leave pass signed by officers or their substitute in order to travel anywhere. And if we were late home to the base, then the Orderley WRAAF would pounce.

Did you arrive late?

I did one night. I had a doctor’s appointment in Melbourne. I slept through the Sale station and got off at Bairnsdale. A taxi was the only way possible to get back. I vaguely remember a cost of $35 which was exorbitant at the time, only to be about 2 minutes late. Orderley WRAAF Sue Thorton, whom I thought was a friend dobbed me and I had to go before the Madam. Not sure of my penalty.

But I have never forgotten the night.
